Replacing a joint can be a brand new start, freeing you of the pain, difficulties, and other consequences that you may be experiencing. Fortunately, our orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Vipul Dua, is highly skilled and experienced in performing these procedures, so when you need our Hartford hip replacement, you can feel completely confident in the results.
The basics of the surgery are that ends of the bone are replaced to create new joint surfaces. The material used can be either metal, ceramic, or plastic and in the case of hips, it is the femur that is replaced and the hip socket in the pelvic bone that is resurfaced to complete the work. Depending on the circumstances, the new parts may either be cemented to your bones or attached using a a porous material that allows new bone to grow and fill up the openings in the porous coating. Dr. Dua will discuss your unique situation with you and decide which method is most appropriate to get you the best results with our Hartford hip replacement. As with any type of surgery, there will be a period of recovery and rehabilitation. You will be out of bed most likely the same day as surgery, using the help of crutches or a walker. Pain medication and possibly drugs to prevent blood clots may be part of your post-surgical treatment protocol. Later, you will work with a physical therapist and maybe an occupational therapist, doing necessary exercises that will see you gaining strength and flexibility. While you will have regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Dua in order to check your progress, you should be able to return to your normal routine in anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, again depending on a variety of factors.
