Studies have demonstrated great success using PRP injections to treat many orthopedic conditions and injuries. Platelets, one of the components of blood, are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important in the healing of injuries. PRP is plasma with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood. To develop a PRP preparation, blood is taken from a patient. The platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased during a process called centrifugation. Then the increased concentration of platelets is combined with the remaining blood. It is expected that the increase in growth factors results in speeding up the healing process.
Manchester PRP therapy carefully injects the treated platelets into the injured area. It may also be used to improve healing after surgery for some injuries.
According to the research studies currently reported, PRP is most effective in the treatment of chronic tendon injuries, especially tennis elbow, a very common injury of the tendons on the outside of the elbow.
Manchester PRP therapy is also promising for other chronic tendon injuries, and acute ligament and muscle injuries. More recently, PRP has been used during certain types of surgery to help tissues heal. Surgery to repair torn knee ligaments, especially the anterior cruciate ligament, have benefited from PRP. This is an exciting area of rehabilitative medicine currently being pursued by Dr. Dua. To find out if PRP injections are right for you, give him a call today.
